Greenpeace said Tuesday it is planning a legal challenge against U.K. authorities that are allowing Shell (NYSE:SHEL) to develop the Jackdaw gas field in the North Sea, Reuters reports.

Shell (SHEL) made a final investment decision Monday to develop Jackdaw, which is expected to come onstream in the mid-2020s and could provide more than 6% of the U.K.’s total gas production.

U.K. authorities initially rejected Shell’s (SHEL) Jackdaw development plans on environmental grounds but approved after the company changed the way the project would deal with operational emissions.

Greenpeace says the U.K. government is wrong to take operational emissions only into account when granting permission to extract fossil fuels.

A similar case brought by Greenpeace over BP’s Vorlich oil field initially was rejected by a Scottish court, but the group has appealed the ruling at the Supreme Court.

Britain is struggling with soaring energy prices; gas and electricity regulator Ofgem has warned that Brits should brace for a 42% increase in utility bills this fall.
