Rudy Giuliani has tested positive for coronavirus, President Donald Trump announced on Sunday. That makes his personal attorney the youngest person among the dozen who have been linked with the White House to contract the disease in recent months as Trump’s inner circle continues to violate CDC health guidelines.
Trump wished Giuliani a speedy recovery in a Twitter post and again referred to Covid-19 as the “China virus”, a derogatory description that was criticized as racist. Public health officials avoid naming viruses by country or region so as not to stigmatize people from those areas.
Giuliani has led Trump’s legal battle to undo President-elect Joe Biden’s victory in November’s elections, claiming widespread electoral fraud without evidence. In the past few days, he has traveled to several battlefield states on allegations of electoral fraud while failing to provide evidence in legal cases.
His diagnosis disrupts Trump’s already-endangered efforts to overthrow the presidential election. The president vowed that if Giuliani recovered, his fight would continue.
Jenna Ellis, Trump’s senior legal advisor, said she prayed for Giuliani, whom she described as a “tough warrior”. Ellis said her efforts to combat the election results were “unaffected”.
Giuliani, 76, belongs to a high-risk group for Covid-19. It is unclear whether he has symptoms or not. Giuliani’s team did not immediately respond to CNBC’s request for comment.
Just hours before Trump’s announcement, Giuliani appeared on Fox News’ Sunday Morning Futures to continue unconfirmed arguments of election fraud. The former New York City Mayor was in Atlanta Thursday to attend a Senate Judiciary Committee hearing on election security.
Giuliani’s diagnosis comes about two weeks after his son Andrew Giuliani, who acts as Trump’s special assistant, also tested positive for the virus.
Giuliani is the youngest person in the President’s inner circle to sign Covid-19. At least 52 people connected to the White House have tested positive in the past few months, including Trump, the First Lady, his sons Donald Trump Jr. and Barron, his chief of staff, and several other senior advisors.
Trump’s inner circle regularly violates CDC social distancing guidelines, which are designed to help mitigate the spread of the virus. Several senior officials tested positive for coronavirus after attending a crowded celebration of Justice Amy Coney Barrett’s nomination to the Supreme Court that saw people not wearing masks. White House Health Advisor Dr. Anthony Fauci, called the ceremony a “superspreader event”.
The president also held an election vigil inside the White House. Chief of Staff Mark Meadows and Secretary for Housing and Urban Development Ben Carson tested positive after attending the party.
Trump loyalist Corey Lewandowski also tested positive after the party. Lewandowski appeared with Giuliani in Philadelphia outside a landscaping company to make unfounded allegations of election fraud after the election for Biden was scheduled.
