McDonald’s will launch three chicken sandwiches in February in an effort to reach new customers with more poultry on the menu.

Starting February 24th, consumers will be able to purchase the Crispy Chicken Sandwich, Spicy Chicken Sandwich and Deluxe Chicken Sandwich.

The fast food giant began testing the crispy chicken sandwich in Houston and Knoxville, Tennessee almost a year ago. The sandwich consists of a fried chicken fillet served on a buttered potato roll and topped with butter and cucumber. The spicy version has a spicy pepper sauce, while the deluxe sandwich has more toppings: shredded lettuce, Roma tomatoes and mayo.

In November, executives told investors they would be increasing the menu items with chicken because the category is growing faster than beef. While the new chicken sandwiches are only part of that strategy, McDonald’s USA president Joe Erlinger said at the time that the new options will help consumers see McDonald’s differently.

In recent years, privately owned Chick-fil-A has overtaken other restaurant chains to become the third largest in the US by sales, lagging behind Starbucks and McDonald’s. The chicken-focused menu has drawn new consumers as it has grown beyond the southern base and increased competition with McDonald’s.

Other rivals, Popeyes in particular, have successfully challenged Chick-fil-A with a chicken sandwich. Since the item was launched nearly a year and a half ago, the Restaurant Brands International chain has seen double-digit sales growth in the same store every quarter, despite the coronavirus pandemic.

McDonald’s shares, valued at $ 162 billion, fell 2% in morning trading. The stock ended 2020 up 8%.
