WASHINGTON – Federal prosecutors on Monday filed two additional charges in the sex crime case against Ghislaine Maxwell, a British celebrity and friend of the late sex criminal and financier Jeffrey Esptein.
The new censuses filed in the southern borough of New York accuse Maxwell of the sex trafficking and underage sex trafficking conspiracy.
Maxwell’s attorneys did not immediately respond to CNBC’s request for comment.
Maxwell, who is awaiting trial for recruiting underage girls to be sexually assaulted by Epstein, was arrested on July 2 in New Hampshire. She has pleaded not guilty in the case.
“Between about 1994 and about 2004 and about 2004, Ghislaine Maxwell, the Defendant, facilitated Jeffrey Epstein’s access to underage victims by, among other things, encouraging, enticing, and facilitating and facilitating several underage victims. The victims were cared for and / or ill-treated in a number of locations “, it says in the court documents.
“The victims were only 14 years old when they were cared for and mistreated by Maxwell and Epstein. Both knew that certain victims were actually under 18 years of age,” the records say.
In addition to allegations related to allegedly recruiting and caring for multiple underage girls for her ex-boyfriend Epstein in the 1990s, Maxwell is also charged with perjury for lying during a filing of a lawsuit filed by an Epstein prosecutor.
Maxwell is due to stand trial in July.
The 66-year-old Epstein died in August 2019 in a federal prison in Manhattan as a result of a suicide by hanging.
At the time of his death, Epstein was being held without bail for trafficking in children.
Epstein, a former friend of Presidents Donald Trump and Bill Clinton, previously pleaded guilty to Florida charges of including paying an underage girl for sexual services.
In this case, he was imprisoned for 13 months but was released for much of that time on account of being fired.
